What Happens to the Brain as We Age?

Aging in the brain doesn't have to be a one-way street. If you want to preserve your mental function, there are some things that you can do. You need to know what is happening when it comes time for aging neurons and neurotransmitters, but also understand how stress impacts the hippocampus, our memory bank.

As we get older, plaques and tangles accumulate in the brain. Plaques are proteins that mount up between neurons while tangles are fibers that grow inside of nerve cells. Too much of these two substances is thought to kill nerves like Alzheimer's Disease, an age-related disease.

Stress is inevitable in everyday life because it helps us get over obstacles that are often large or small. Of course, stress has many negative effects too. So try not to be stressed so much! According to some studies, stress can accelerate the degeneration of your brain-not just make you look older! Those who are easily stressed also have higher risks for cognitive impairment than those who aren't. You should examine yourself and figure out how best you respond to the challenges of daily life (i.e., by praying). An hour a day of this practice could give you two hours less work time each subsequent day due to lower stress levels afterwards!

One way to stay sharp is by having enough sleep. A new study in Massachusetts General Hospital found that adequate sleep helps improve your cognitive abilities and overall mood, as well as making you more attentive. On the other hand, if you don't get enough sleep than you should be getting (less than 8 hours), then it can lead to a bad performance and mood problems.

Regularly meditating also has many benefits for our brain functions- attention, memory and learning all benefit from meditation! Meditating regularly can also slow down the shrinking of gray matter we experience with age-- this is especially helpful for young people because they often think that only old people meditate! However recent research shows that those who start mediation early on will have better attention spans later in life too.

One can't end a list of anti-aging recommendations without mentioning about eating right. It is true when they say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away! Apples are rich in Flavonoids that protect your brain cells from free radicals and contain antioxidants which make both your skin look young, while also raising levels of the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine which diminishes as we age.

Just for review, this neurotransmitter is very important for our memory and neurons' ability to transport messages from one another.
